The Male Spiritual Journey

Our culture teaches that money, possessions, power and sex will make you happy.  Searching for success in those terms leaves men empty, lonely and dissatisfied.

A Different Path

Wise men through the ages have taught that accepting our human limitations and being open and present to God, self, and others is the way to being fully alive.

At a Glance

While many of us have completed the Men's Rites of Passage created by Fr. Richard Rohr, OFM, our goal is to promote spiritual growth, healing and wholeness for all men.

A Chapter of Illuman

Illuman is a not for profit organization for men who are simply interested in becoming better, more authentic men.

  • Right words make all of us feel falsely important. Right action keeps all of us forever beginners.

  • Our wounds are the only thing humbling enough to break our attachment to our false self.

  • All great spirituality is about what we do with our pain.

  • Strangely, we find deep healing in places that connect us to the shadows we suppress in our consciousness. Belden’s Books on Amazon

  • We must share in our suffering, in our joy.   Its the fabric of humanity.

    Jared Adams
  • …we voiced our fears, joys, sorrows, anger and shame to one another. We didn’t talk back, we didn’t judge. We simply listened.

    David Wenger
  • Seeing the beauty of nature…refreshes me and helps me think about the larger issues of life.

    Tom Lehman
  • …vulnerability…something gentleman, we, for the most part, are often very afraid to face or admit.

  • Keeping the edges hot” reminds me that I have a continuous and gentle calling from God to stretch, grow, and risk—at the very moments I’d prefer to retreat and stay safe…

    Richard Gibson
  • Every missed rite of passage leads to a new “rigidification” of the personality

  • True spirituality is not taught, it’s caught. Once our sails have been unfurled to the Spirit, henceforth our motivation for the journey toward holiness and wholeness is immense gratitude.

  • “You know after any truly initiating experience that you are part of a much bigger whole. Life is not about you henceforward, but you are about life.”

About Us

Indiana-Michigan MALEs is a group of men, many of whom have completed the Men's Rites of Passage (MROP) created by Fr. Richard Rohr, OFM. Our goal is to promote spiritual growth, healing, and wholeness for all men. We do this by holding retreats, encouraging men to be honest and open with each other and helping men to connect through small group meetings which offer fellowship, growth and accountability.
